Herkimer Enhydro Specimen — 386g, Moving Water Bubble

A single Herkimer “diamond” — not a diamond at all, but a double-terminated quartz crystal that grew freely in a pocket of dolomite in upstate New York, faceted at both ends by nothing but time.

This one holds a bubble of water trapped inside it. Tilt the crystal and the bubble moves. Collectors call these enhydro crystals: the water was sealed in as the quartz closed around it, and it has been in there, undisturbed, for something on the order of 500 million years. It also throws rainbows where internal fractures catch the light.

Herkimer quartz is traditionally associated with clarity and with clearing the air — many people keep a piece on a desk or an altar rather than wearing it. You don't need to hold any particular belief to enjoy it; it is a very old, very clear object that does something surprising in the light.
